This article is about the existentialist phrase coined by Jean-Paul Sartre.

The proposition that existence precedes essence (French: l'existence précède l'essence) is a central claim of existentialism, which reverses the traditional philosophical view that the essence (the nature) of a thing is more fundamental and immutable than its existence (the mere fact of its being).
[1] To existentialists, human beings—through their consciousness—create their own values and determine a meaning for their life because the human being does not possess any inherent identity or value.
That identity or value must be created by the individual.
By posing the acts that constitute them, they make their existence more significant.[2][3]

The idea can be found in the works of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard in the 19th century,[4] but was explicitly formulated by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in the 20th century.
The three-word formula originated in his 1945[5] lecture "Existentialism Is a Humanism",[6] though antecedent notions can be found in Heidegger's Being and Time.[7]

Sartre's view

The Sartrean claim is best understood in contrast to the scholastic thesis that essence precedes existence, i.e. a typical claim for this traditional thesis would be a human is essentially selfish, or that they are a rational being.

To Sartre, "existence precedes essence" means that a personality is not built over a previously designed model or a precise purpose, because it is the human being who chooses to engage in such enterprise.
While not denying the constraining conditions of human existence, he answers to Spinoza who affirmed that people are determined by what surrounds them.
Therefore, to Sartre an oppressive situation is not intolerable in itself, but once regarded as such by those who feel oppressed the situation becomes intolerable.
So by projecting my intentions onto my present condition, "It is I who freely transform it into action". When he said that "the world is a mirror of my freedom", he meant that the world obliged me to react, to overtake myself.
It is this overtaking of a present constraining situation by a project to come that Sartre names transcendence.
He added that "we are condemned to be free".[8]


When it is said that people define themselves, it is often perceived as stating that they can "wish" to be something – anything, a bird, for instance – and then be it.
According to Sartre's account, however, this would be a kind of bad faith.
What is meant by the statement is that people are (1) defined only insofar as they act and (2) that they are responsible for their actions.
To clarify, it can be said that a person who acts cruelly towards other people is, by that act, defined as a cruel person and in that same instance, they (as opposed to their genes, for instance) are defined as being responsible for being this cruel person.
Of course, the more positive therapeutic aspect of this is also implied: You can choose to act in a different way, and to be a good person instead of a cruel person.
Here it is also clear that since people can choose to be either cruel or good, they are, in fact, neither of these things essentially.[9]

To claim that existence precedes essence is to assert that there is no such predetermined essence to be found in humans, and that an individual's essence is defined by the individual through how that individual creates and lives his or her life. As Sartre puts it in his Existentialism is a Humanism: "man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world – and defines himself afterwards".[10]

Existentialism tends to focus on the question of human existence and the conditions of this existence. What is meant by existence is the concrete life of each individual, and their concrete ways of being in the world.
Even though this concrete individual existence must be the primary source of information in the study of people, certain conditions are commonly held to be "endemic" to human existence.
These conditions are usually in some way related to the inherent meaninglessness or absurdity of the earth and its apparent contrast with our pre-reflexive lived lives which normally present themselves to us as meaningful.
A central theme is that since the world "in-itself" is absurd, that is, not "fair", then a meaningful life can at any point suddenly lose all its meaning.
The reasons why this happens are many, ranging from a tragedy that "tears a person's world apart", to the results of an honest inquiry into one's own existence.
Such an encounter can make a person mentally unstable, and avoiding such instability by making people aware of their condition and ready to handle it is one of the central themes of existentialism.
Albert Camus, for instance, famously claimed in Le Mythe de Sisyphe that "there is only one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide".[11]

Aside from these "psychological" issues, it is also claimed that these encounters with the absurd are where we are most in touch with our condition as humans.
Such an encounter cannot be without philosophical significance, and existentialist philosophers derive many metaphysical theories from these encounters.
These are often related to the self, consciousness and freedom as well as the nature of meaning.

Damping is an influence within or upon an oscillatory system that has the effect of reducing, restricting or preventing its oscillations. In physical systems, damping is produced by processes that dissipate the energy stored in the oscillation.[1] Examples include viscous drag in mechanical systems, resistance in electronic oscillators, and absorption and scattering of light in optical oscillators. Damping not based on energy loss can be important in other oscillating systems such as those that occur in biological systems and bikes.[2]

The damping ratio is a dimensionless measure describing how oscillations in a system decay after a disturbance. Many systems exhibit oscillatory behavior when they are disturbed from their position of static equilibrium. A mass suspended from a spring, for example, might, if pulled and released, bounce up and down. On each bounce, the system tends to return to its equilibrium position, but overshoots it. Sometimes losses (e.g. frictional) damp the system and can cause the oscillations to gradually decay in amplitude towards zero or attenuate. The damping ratio is a measure describing how rapidly the oscillations decay from one bounce to the next.

The damping ratio is a system parameter, denoted by ζ (zeta), that can vary from undamped (ζ = 0), underdamped (ζ < 1) through critically damped (ζ = 1) to overdamped (ζ > 1).

The behaviour of oscillating systems is often of interest in a diverse range of disciplines that include control engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and electrical engineering. The physical quantity that is oscillating varies greatly, and could be the swaying of a tall building in the wind, or the speed of an electric motor, but a normalised, or non-dimensionalised approach can be convenient in describing common aspects of behavior.

Oscillation cases

Depending on the amount of damping present, a system exhibits different oscillatory behaviors.

Where the spring–mass system is completely lossless, the mass would oscillate indefinitely, with each bounce of equal height to the last. This hypothetical case is called undamped.
If the system contained high losses, for example if the spring–mass experiment were conducted in a viscous fluid, the mass could slowly return to its rest position without ever overshooting. This case is called overdamped.
Commonly, the mass tends to overshoot its starting position, and then return, overshooting again. With each overshoot, some energy in the system is dissipated, and the oscillations die towards zero. This case is called underdamped.
Between the overdamped and underdamped cases, there exists a certain level of damping at which the system will just fail to overshoot and will not make a single oscillation. This case is called critical damping. The key difference between critical damping and overdamping is that, in critical damping, the system returns to equilibrium in the minimum amount of time.

The damping ratio is a parameter, usually denoted by ζ (zeta),[3] that characterizes the frequency response of a second-order ordinary differential equation. It is particularly important in the study of control theory. It is also important in the harmonic oscillator.

The damping ratio provides a mathematical means of expressing the level of damping in a system relative to critical damping. For a damped harmonic oscillator with mass m, damping coefficient c, and spring constant k, it can be defined as the ratio of the damping coefficient in the system's differential equation to the critical damping coefficient:

The damping ratio is dimensionless, being the ratio of two coefficients of identical units.

Two such solutions, for the two values of s satisfying the equation, can be combined to make the general real solutions, with oscillatory and decaying properties in several regimes:

Undamped
Is the case where ζ = 0 {\displaystyle \zeta =0} {\displaystyle \zeta =0} corresponds to the undamped simple harmonic oscillator, and in that case the solution looks like exp ⁡ ( i ω n t ) {\displaystyle \exp(i\omega _{n}t)} \exp(i\omega _{n}t), as expected.
Underdamped

Overdamped If s is a pair of real values, then the solution is simply a sum of two decaying exponentials with no oscillation. This case occurs for ζ > 1 {\displaystyle \zeta >1} \zeta >1, and is referred to as overdamped.
Critically damped
The case where ζ = 1 {\displaystyle \zeta =1} \zeta =1 is the border between the overdamped and underdamped cases, and is referred to as critically damped. This turns out to be a desirable outcome in many cases where engineering design of a damped oscillator is required (e.g., a door closing mechanism).

Q factor and decay rate

The Q factor, damping ratio ζ, and exponential decay rate α are related such that[4]

When a second-order system has ζ < 1 {\displaystyle \zeta <1} \zeta <1 (that is, when the system is underdamped), it has two complex conjugate poles that each have a real part of − α {\displaystyle -\alpha } -\alpha ; that is, the decay rate parameter α {\displaystyle \alpha } \alpha represents the rate of exponential decay of the oscillations. A lower damping ratio implies a lower decay rate, and so very underdamped systems oscillate for long times.[5] For example, a high quality tuning fork, which has a very low damping ratio, has an oscillation that lasts a long time, decaying very slowly after being struck by a hammer.

Percentage overshoot

In control theory, overshoot refers to an output exceeding its final, steady-state value.[6] For a step input, the percentage overshoot (PO) is the maximum value minus the step value divided by the step value. In the case of the unit step, the overshoot is just the maximum value of the step response minus one.

The percentage overshoot (PO) is related to damping ratio (ζ) by:

We can analyze the response of the control systems in both the time domain and the frequency domain. We will discuss frequency response analysis of control systems in later chapters. Let us now discuss about the time response analysis of control systems.
What is Time Response?

If the output of control system for an input varies with respect to time, then it is called the time response of the control system. The time response consists of two parts.

Transient response
Steady state response

The response of control system in time domain is shown in the following figure.

Time Response

Here, both the transient and the steady states are indicated in the figure. The responses corresponding to these states are known as transient and steady state responses.

Mathematically, we can write the time response c(t) as

Where,

ctr(t) is the transient response
css(t) is the steady state response

Transient Response

After applying input to the control system, output takes certain time to reach steady state. So, the output will be in transient state till it goes to a steady state. Therefore, the response of the control system during the transient state is known as transient response.

The transient response will be zero for large values of ‘t’. Ideally, this value of ‘t’ is infinity and practically, it is five times constant.

Mathematically, we can write it as

Steady state Response

The part of the time response that remains even after the transient response has zero value for large values of ‘t’ is known as steady state response. This means, the transient response will be zero even during the steady state.

Example

Let us find the transient and steady state terms of the time response of the control system c(t)=10+5e−t

Here, the second term 5e−t

will be zero as t denotes infinity. So, this is the transient term. And the first term 10 remains even as t approaches infinity. So, this is the steady state term.
Standard Test Signals

The standard test signals are impulse, step, ramp and parabolic. These signals are used to know the performance of the control systems using time response of the output.
Unit Impulse Signal

A unit impulse signal, δ(t) is defined as

for t≠0

and ∫0+0−δ(t)dt=1

So, the unit impulse signal exists only at ‘t’ is equal to zero. The area of this signal under small interval of time around ‘t’ is equal to zero is one. The value of unit impulse signal is zero for all other values of ‘t’.
Unit Step Signal

A unit step signal, u(t) is defined as

=0;t<0

Is all energy made of photons?

No. The rest mass/energy of particles doesn’t involve photons.
Gravitational potential energy doesn’t involve photons.
The energy of nuclei due to the strong interaction doesn’t involve photons.

The only energy that involves photons is electromagnetic energy (which technically includes chemical energy) and light.

Difference Between Analog and Digital Communication

The crucial difference between Analog and Digital Communication is that Analog communication uses analog signals for transmission and reception of data while digital communication uses digital signals for transmitting and receiving data. Analog signals are the continuous time-varying signal while digital signals are those which consist of discrete values.

Digital communication provides various advantages such as it is immune to noise and distortion as it possesses greater signal to noise ratio. The uses of repeaters in case of digital communication improve the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) further. Moreover, digital communication requires less power than analog communication.

The other differences between Analog and Digital Communication can be understood with the help of comparison chart and key differences.

Definition of Analog Communication

In analog communication, the data is transferred from transmitter and receiver with the help of analog signal. Analog signal possesses continuous varying amplitude with time. Any type of data such as voice, sound etc. can be transferred through an analog signal.

Firstly, the data needs to be converted into electrical form. As voice, sound is non-electric in nature, it can be converted into electric form with the help of transducer. Then this signal is passed through the communication channel.

Analog communication is appropriate for short distance communication. Although, we can also use it for long distance communication with the help of analog modulation technique such as amplitude modulation and angle modulation.

Modulation is the process of multiplying the low-frequency information signal with a high-frequency carrier signal. Then, this signal is transmitted through the channel. Thus, one modulator is required at the transmitter end, and one demodulator is connected at receiving end for retrieving the original signal.

The major drawback of Analog Communication is that the strength of the signal starts diminishing with the increase in the distance travelled. Thus, the signal to noise ratio starts getting degrade. Moreover, noise affects the Analog signal more than digital signal because analog signal is a continuous time-varying signal.
Definition of Digital Communication

Digital Communication is the one which uses digital signals for transmitting information between source and destination. Digital signals are represented by a square wave. This signal consists of discrete values rather than continuous values.

Digital

The digital signal is formed by the sampling of the analog signal. The samples of Analog signal are taken, and they are quantized. Digital signals usually consist of signals with two states ON or OFF, i.e. 0 & 1. After the sampling and quantization, the digital signal so obtained is modulated by digital modulation techniques.

PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation), DPCM are some of the digital modulation techniques. The digital communication system also consists of repeaters to intensify the signal which undergoes attenuation due to travelling a particular distance. The repeaters intensify the information signal and suppress the noise signal. Thus repeaters also maintain the SNR effectively.

The significant advantage of using Digital Communication is that it is not deteriorated by channel noise. This is because the digital signal is not a continuously varying signal.

Thus, if noise effects mix with the digital signal, the original signal can be retrieved from the distorted signal. This is because if noise effects one of the points of the signal amplitude, we know the range in which that point lies because digital signal consists of discrete values.
Key Differences Between Analog and Digital Communication

Bandwidth: This factor creates the key difference between Analog and digital communication. Analog signal requires less bandwidth for the transmission while digital signal requires more bandwidth for the transmission.
Power Requirement: Power requirement in case of digital communication is less a compared to Analog communication. Since the bandwidth requirement in digital systems is more thus, they consume less power. And Analog communication system requires less bandwidth thus more power.
Fidelity: Fidelity is a factor which creates a crucial difference between Analog and digital communication. Fidelity is the ability of the receiver which receives the output exactly in coherence with that of transmitted input. Digital communication offers more fidelity as compared to Analog Communication.
Hardware Flexibility: The hardware of analog communication system is not as flexible as digital communication. The equipment used in digital technology are compact in size and consumes less power.
Error Rate: Error rate is another significant difference which separates Analog and Digital Communication. In Analog instruments, there is an error due to parallax or other kinds of observational method.
Synchronization: Digital communication system offers to synchronize which is not effective in analog communication. Thus, synchronization also creates a key difference between Analog and Digital Communication.
Cost: Digital communication equipments are costly and digital signal require more bandwidth for transmission.


Conclusion

Analog communication is entirely the use of continuous time varying signal for the transmission of information from the sender to receiver. On the other hand, digital communication utilizes the usage of digital technology for sending the information over the channel.

Analog communication is becoming obsolete in contemporary times with the advent of digital technology. The drawback of using digital communication is that it requires more bandwidth for transmission which makes it costly. Thus, if cost is not the issue we can use digital communication for our purpose, but if we need an economical system then choose Analog.

Why did Einstein assume the speed of light as constant in a vacuum?

Two reasons.

One is theoretical: A constant speed of light is predicted by Maxwell’s equations of electrodynamics so long as the electromagnetic properties of the vacuum are treated as constants of nature. If different observers, moving at different speeds, measured different values for the speed of light, that would mean that the properties of the vacuum (its electric permittivity and magnetic permeability) would not be the same for these observers. This made little sense.

The other is experimental: Einstein probably knew about the result of the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment that showed that the measured speed of light is not affected by the Earth’s motion in space.

In terms of modern language, we know that the vacuum Maxwell equations are “conformally invariant”: they do not change under an arbitrary “angle-preserving” transformation in four-dimensional spacetime. If we also allow charges, this symmetry is reduced to an invariance under a subset, namely the Lorentz-Poincaré group of four-dimensional hyperbolic rotations and translations. Special relativity, fundamentally, is the physics that ensues once we assume Lorentz-Poincaré invariance, which, for all practical intents and purposes, is equivalent to assuming that the speed of light is constant.

We think we die and rot into the ground, and thus must squeeze everything in before it’s too late. If life — yours, mine — is a just a one-time deal, then we’re as likely to be screwed as pampered. But experiments suggest this view of the world may be wrong.

Life is a flowering and adventure that transcends our ordinary linear way of thinking, an interlude in a melody so vast and eternal that human ears can’t appreciate the tonal range of the symphony.

The results of quantum physics confirm that observations can’t be predicted absolutely. Instead, there’s a range of possible observations each with a different probability. One mainstream explanation, the “many-worlds” interpretation, states that there are an infinite number of universes (the “multiverse”). Everything that can possibly happen occurs in some universe. The old mechanical — “we’re just a bunch of atoms” — view of life loses its grip in these scenarios.

Biocentrism extends this idea, suggesting that life is a flowering and adventure that transcends our ordinary linear way of thinking. Although our individual bodies are destined to self-destruct, the “me” feeling is just energy operating in the brain. But this energy doesn’t go away at death. One of the surest principles of science is that energy never dies; it can neither be created nor destroyed. When we die, we do so not in the random billiard ball matrix but in the inescapable life matrix. Life has a non-linear dimensionality — it’s like a perennial flower that returns to bloom in the multiverse.

A series of landmark experiments show that measurements an observer makes can influence events that have already happened in the past. One experiment (Science 315, 966, 2007) confirmed that flipping a switch could retroactively change a result that had happened before the switch was flipped. Regardless of the choice you, the observer, make, it’ll be you who will experience the outcomes — the universes — that will result. The implications of this were clear with my sister “Bubbles.” The earliest remembrance I have of my childhood was with her, in her play doctor’s office. “You’re a little unwell,” she said, handing me a cup of sand. “It’s medicine. Drink this and you’ll feel better.” This I did; and as I started to drink it, Bubbles cried out “No!” and gave a gasp as if she were swallowing it herself.

The affection that existed between Bubbles and me was a strong one, for being my older sister, she had always felt that it was her job to protect me. I can remember standing at the school bus stop with my little mittens and lunchbox, when one of the older neighborhood boys pushed me to the ground. I was still on the ground and hurt, when I saw Bubbles running up the street. “You touch my little brother ever again,” she said, “and I’ll punch your face in.”

It’s difficult to believe that I, and not she, went on to become the doctor. Although she was very bright, by 10th grade she’d dropped out of school and entered on a course of destruction with drugs. The ill done to her at home had little remission. She was beaten, ran away, and punished again. I recall her hiding under the porch, and the terror that hung about the place; I can see the tears running down her face. After moving out of the house I learned she was pregnant. When all the relatives refused to go to her wedding, I told her “It’s okay!” and held her hand. The birth of “Little Bubbles” was a happy occasion, an oasis in this life in the desert. How happy she was, and when I sat down by her side, she asked me — her little brother — if I’d be the godfather to her child.

But all this was a short event, and stands like a wild flower along an asphalt road. Little by little her mind began to deteriorate. Although I’d seen a lot of medicine by then, it was a matter of some emotion to me to see her child taken away. The deep remembrance I have of her being utterly without hope, restrained and sedated with drugs. As I went away from the hospital that day, I mingled my memories of her with tears.

Bubbles was still a pretty woman, and was found in the park once, quite distressed, her hair hanging in her face and her clothes torn; of which she knew as little as us. A while later she was pregnant, and I can only understand that someone had taken advantage of her again. I remember her looking at me in embarrassment, holding the baby in her arms. He had a cute face, and I thought, didn’t look like anyone we knew.

Soon after, my big sister — a once proud woman — lost even the remembrance of where she lived.

This tale of Bubbles is one that has a thousand variations, told by many families, of tragedy interspersed with joyous times. But plays of experience, even ones like that of my sister, are never random, nor the end of the story. Rather, they’re interludes in a melody so vast and eternal that human ears can’t appreciate the tonal range of the symphony.

“Whenever anything in nature seems to us ridiculous, absurd or evil,” said Spinoza “it is because we have but a partial knowledge of things.”

Life has a power that transcends any individual history or universe.
The story of my sister is part of a more profound drama, one that I know holds more joyful fortunes as her life unfolds in the multiverse.
As in the Science experiment, whether it’s flipping a switch or making other choices, she will experience the many outcomes and resulting universes.
I only hope — if she becomes a doctor — the medicine goes down a lot easier than it did in her play-office so long ago.
